Gratituesday: Good News from the Doctor

Good news from a doctor is always a welcome thing. It's seemed like doctors around us have been doling out a good bit of bad news lately. Within the past 2 weeks, 2 of my pastors have been diagnosed with brain tumors! Yes, one pastor stepped down from the ministry a few years ago, but he married us and I still count him as one of my pastors.

On Friday, Baby was diagnosed with MRSA on his leg. I wasn't too concerned since the doctor assured me it wasn't a huge deal. I didn't have the internet at the time so I didn't do a search to learn more. I felt like it was the "olden days" that I remember from my childhood. Well, once we finally had internet back on Sunday, I did my search and was quite alarmed at the second sentence - "may be fatal!" Ack! This is my BABY we're talking about!

We were able to get in for a follow-up with our regular doctor (had to see the on-call doc on Friday). She put my mind at ease! The culture of the grossness came back from the lab and it was NOT MRSA but just a bad strep infection on his skin. This news didn't negate the fevers and just overall sick baby, but BOY, did it make me feel better! We now have a new prescription antibiotic cream to add to the oral antibiotics to kick this nastiness out of there quickly! I also have a renewed resolve to keep those fingernails cut closer since the infection probably began with a teeny nick in the skin.

Praise God my little man is almost healed!

K-Mart Trip!

Score! My total was initially $58. After coupons (and one small return), my total came to $11! Here's what I bought:
  • 1 box Hefty garbage bags
  • 2 boxes Ziplock (new environmental ones) sandwich bags
  • 2 small packs of Infant Tylenol
  • 2 Degree men's deodorant
  • 1 Visene for contacts drops
  • 1 big box Lipton tea bags
  • 1 box Huggies wipes
  • 1 bottle Flintstone vitamins
  • 2 Oral B toothbrushes (I returned these after coupon snafu)
How did I manage the deal? I made sure my total was just above $50 (without any of the tempting home fragrance items since they aren't included in the coupon deal) to use the $5/$50 coupon that came in the Sunday insert. I gathered all the high dollar coupons I had and prioritized my needs. I made sure I had a few more than the 10 coupon limit just to make sure I had enough to reach my limit.
  • $1 off Hefty bags
  • $1.50/2 Ziplock
  • $2 off Infant Tylenol (2 Q's)
  • $1 off Degree
  • $2 off Visene
  • $1.50 off Huggies Diaper product
  • $1 off Flintstones
  • BOGO free Oral B toothbrushes
  • Free box Lipton tea coupon that arrived in the mail.
Where did I get these coupons? Most of them were printed from I got the Tylenol Q's from the doctor's office - there was a tearpad right at the sign-in clipboard! I signed up for some sort of Lipton freebie earlier this year and received this coupon in the mail. The Visene is from All You magazine and the Degree and Oral B were from newspaper inserts.

So, what was the snafu? There were rumors that BOGO free Q's doubled by making both items free. I was curious. We needed some manual toothbrushes for when our electric ones didn't work or we were traveling. I had a BOGO free Q. The problem? The Q didn't work at all. Why? I got the wrong toothbrushes! Rather than have them fish the Q out of the drawer after everything was paid for, I simply returned them and got $6 in cash handed to me.

Now, can YOU score a deal like this at K-Mart? You sure can! First make sure your K-Mart accepts printed coupons. Go to Print the coupons for items you need and print coupons that are high dollar value (not OVER $2 though). Clip your newspaper coupons. Pull out the high dollar coupons. Set aside a good hour to spend at K-Mart. Clip the $5/$50 Q from the circular (I found one in the store since I forgot to take mine).

Match the coupons with the smallest size item you can for the greatest savings. Remember the 10 coupon limit per day (not all stores enforce this). I keep a little notebook with me where I write down the cost of each item plus the expected savings. This way I can track when I am close to my desired dollar amount and can keep myself from impulse buys.

When you check out, hand over the $5/$50 coupon FIRST otherwise you will not get the savings. Then hand over the rest of the coupons. After checking out, double check your receipt. Fix any errors at customer service before you leave the store. I got a catalina coupon at checkout for ANOTHER $5/$50!

Now, get out there and SHOP! This should be the last super double event of the YEAR!

Menu Planning Monday

So, we have a ton of leftovers to start our week with. Let's see if we can stick to my plan a little better this week! We were thrown off last week with the sick baby. Poor little guy! He's feeling better, but still having low-grade fevers. His MRSA lesion is looking quite a bit better but still quite gross.

I do have a pack of hash browns that I need to prepare before they spoil. I will be making an egg casserole early in the week to use for breakfasts through the week (our toaster oven went ka-put so it's just cereal for now unless I get my lazy/sleepy self out of bed early to make pancakes or French toast).

Monday - Spaghetti leftovers (given to us by a new mom that had what appeared to be several GALLONS of it delivered to her after the baby came home! She had enough for 3 meals for them and sent us home with 2 meals!)
Tuesday - Chicken drumsticks with biscuits and peas (corn for Hubby)
Wednesday - Mac n Cheese leftovers (complete with little bits of hot dogs)
Thursday - Chicken Quesadillas
Friday - BBQ Cupcakes - recipe here
Saturday - Burger night
Sunday - Frozen pizza

Freebies, Deals, Coupons

Well, there should be some great inserts in this Sunday's paper! Check out the preview here. Please note that some Q's are regional. My area tends to get very lean coupon inserts - probably about half of the coupons listed will be in my paper. One of these days I will get brave and try ordering inserts to take advantage of better coupons. In the mean time, I will just raid my parents' recycle bin when I visit!

What an end to the week! We ended up being without internet for 2 more days plus Baby got sick! I noticed Thursday that Baby seemed to be a bit warm. I was out of town and didn't get to take a non-tylenol-effected temp until late that night when Baby was up and really fussy. He was up to 101 F. Even more alarming than the fever (remember, I'm a first time mom) was a lesion on his leg. It started as a pimple-type thing and morphed into a welt of grossness the size of a silver dollar.

We spent the night sleeping fitfully in the recliner and called the doc first thing in the morning. I even canceled my first eye exam in 6 years. Our normal doc wasn't in but we were able to get in with her associate late Friday afternoon. It turns out, Baby has a type of staph infection, one that is more resistant to antibiotics, called MRSA. Thankfully, the doc explained it is the community variety rather than the much more dangerous hospital variety. We started baby on antibiotics and had one more fitful night (with no internet to research information on his illness at all) in the recliner but thankfully have had no fever since 10am! Also, we have internet again!

Here is what his leg looked like this morning after having antibiotics in his system for 12 hours. The doc had lanced it to drain it and it looks quite a bit smaller and less gross than the day before.

Gratituesday: Good Friends

I am excited! Have I told you I get excited easily? Have I told you I don't sleep for 3 days before Christmas? That I give birthday presents WAY too early because I just can't wait? Well, if Baby wasn't keeping me up all night, I would be up anyway because I am excited! On Thursday, I will get to spend the day with a dear friend, Lisa, from college! I will get to meet her darling daughter and she'll get to meet Baby! We have only seen each other a handful of times for short visits over the last 10 years. Gah! Have I been out of college that long?!?!

I am so thankful for the friends God has brought into my life. He has provided wonderful, godly friends each time we moved. These friends have loved me and challenged me. They have helped me through hard times and have pushed me to grow. On this Gratituesday, I am so thankful for good friends!

Prayer Request

I want to ask all of you to pray for a wonderful man, Steve. Steve is the pastor who married my husband and I 9 years ago. His family has been through a lot. See, nearly 3 years ago, Steve's oldest son was in a terrible car crash that nearly took his life. He was in a coma for years - I don't know the scientific terminology for his current state, but he has definitely come an amazing way. Ian is now starting to relearn how to speak. He is relearning how to walk. He still loves the Lord. Well, this family, after living the amazing trial with Ian and watching God slowly knit his body back together, is dealt another blow. Steve was life-flighted for seizures on Thursday. An orange-sized cancerous tumor was removed from his brain. He is awake and talking now but the prognosis is not promising. The doctors do not know the specific type of tumor yet. There is still some tumor left inside.

Please pray for healing for Steve and strength for his family. Steve has a loving wife, 4 sons, one daughter, Ian's "pre-fiance" that has stayed by his side through this ordeal, and a brand new grand-daughter. Also pray for continued healing for Ian.

You can read the whole story at

Thank you for praying!

Kroger Triple Coupons!

Sooo.... I read on another blog that some WV and OH Krogers were tripling coupons up to $.50. I was intrigued. I found an old paper that I hadn't yet read and saw that it was indeed TRUE! I raced to get my Q's together and headed out. I drove the extra couple minutes across the border to OH to avoid paying sales tax on food. I saved 76%. I could have done better, but I made one mistake and indulged a little.

My total before coupons and MEGA sale was $37.88. I paid $9.79. Here's what I got!

1 tub Huggies wipes (used $.50 Q)
1 Reach floss (used $.50 Q)
12 Gerber baby food jars (used 2 $.50 Q's - made a mistake)
3 Betty Crocker Warm Delights (used 3 $.50 Q's)
2 SoBe Lifewaters (had a bogo free Q)
2 Pilsbury cinnamon rolls (used a $.40 off 2 Q)
3 Betty Crocker cookie mix packs (used 3 $.50 Q's)
2 Velveeta shells and cheese cups (used a $1 off next order catalina from last purchase, received another one for this purchase to use next time)
1 Half gallon milk
1 Kroger brand personal margherita pizza

Where did I go wrong?
  • I had 3 ecoupons on my card for both the warm delights and the cookies, however, only 2 came off of each. I don't know why.
  • I had a $.50 Q for 4 Beech Nut baby food jars with DHA but I grabbed Gerber ones that were on closeout instead so no Q for those (but still closeout)
  • We needed milk
  • I got hungry and wanted to treat myself since I've been by myself all week and will be through Sunday night with Hubby's work schedule right now. I got myself a pizza.
I was pretty pleased! I may do one more trip before the triples end this weekend.

Works For Me Wednesday - Organization for Ex-Teachers

I'm a dork. A certifiable dork. People think I am somewhat normal, and then they get to know me.

This fall, I am beginning my second year of not teaching. Last year I was a little preoccupied with moving across the country at 7 months pregnant and having a preemie. I never realized how hard the transition from working full time to being a stay at home wife and mom could be. I felt so disorganized all year. Part of it was the roller coaster of postpartum issues and thyroid issues. Some of it was just me not figuring out how to organize myself without the normal confines of the school day.

Well, now I am feeling nearly 100% each day. You can read an update in an interview I did on a friend's blog (if you suffer any postpartum issues, I highly recommend her blog). I am starting to get my act together. How, you ask? By implementing structures that worked before!

I had a lightbulb moment one day and got my dorky self to Target's Dollar Spot. I picked up a nifty Teacher's Lesson Plan Book! Why in the world? Well, normal planners just don't have the space for the lists that I need to make and all the information I need to write down for my day. I also want to be intentional as Baby gets older so time doesn't just slip by - we actually DO things and LEARN things.

I told you I am a dork. What else did I do? Well, I printed out a chart I used for grade keeping. No, I'm not grading myself. I am using that to track bill payments and such. Now, if I could only find a new use for a seating chart.....

Hey, it works for me!

Freebies, Deals, Coupons

Well, I have been a bad blogger. I have been slacking off on passing along the deals! I promise, I am not being selfish with them! Here are a bunch to get you through the day!
  • CVS moneymaker! If you can get your hands on any Johnson and Johnson $1 coupons for bandages (not the internet coupons for bandages with neosporin - I found a bunch of the right ones in Rite Aid in a display near the new and expensive ultimate healing bandages - the display is actually for the ultimate healing ones but they have a $5 ultimate healing Q and a $1 regular Q), you can use these on the travel first aid kits located in the trial size area. Right now, those kits are $.99 with $2 ECB back when you buy 2. Without the Q, these little goodies would be free after ECB's. WITH the Q, they are a $1 moneymaker each! Johnson and Johnson has stated in several emails to other bloggers that it is fine to use this Q with this item. The Q states no trial size. The kits are TRAVEL kits, not trial kits. Sweet!
  • If you can't find any first aid kits at CVS and you have the coupon, first of all ask your CVS if they will do a raincheck. Some do, some don't. If not, you can get these kits free at Target as well! Not a moneymaker, but free is good!
  • Great coupons here for school lunch box fillers!
  • New website - Woot! for kids! Here's the deal of the day! This site will do one deal each day so check back often.
  • Woot daily deal - Build a Fort kit
  • Free preview issue of All You magazine - FILLED with great coupons. It is easy to cancel if you do not want to be billed - make sure to read the directions.
  • Free sample of Playtex Sport tampons
  • Free sample of Carefree or Stayfree products
  • Free sample of Emergen-C multi vitamin

Gratituesday: God Uses the Young

Yes, I have already done a Gratituesday blog for the day. I want to do another one! Why? Because I can! Actually, because I MUST!

Yesterday I was thinking through all the hundreds, no, thousands, no, millions of things I am thankful for. The most pressing WAS how I have learned to stretch our dollars and to be a better steward of our resources. Well, one small moment from yesterday keeps replaying itself in my head and I can't keep from sharing.

Luke 10:21
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

I remember years ago hearing a message on how God can use anyone regardless of age or size or even belief in Him. I have seen it happen, but not very recently - until yesterday.

Baby and I were shopping at Kohl's. I had foregone a cart and just carried him thinking we wouldn't be in the store too long. Who knew they would hide the umbrellas?

I set baby on the floor so I could enjoy the feeling of blood back in my arm as I contemplated purchasing a $25 umbrella that Hubby would probably lose within weeks. It was a short contemplation. Near me was a woman shopping for a deal on a purse. I hardly noticed her. Baby, however, crawled right over to her (just a mere 2 feet), raised his hand up to her, and shouted, "HI!" or something that sounded like a happy greeting.

This woman turned around and looked down with great surprise. Her eyes brightened as she engaged Baby in a "conversation." She turned to me and told me how thankful she was Baby said hello to her, you see, her son was going off to college this week and she was very sad. She told me how Baby helped her instantly remember the big picture, remember her son as a baby and how much he has grown.

There is no way I could have known the pain this woman was feeling. She was just another bargain shopper. Baby knew what she needed. I imagine God speaking to his tiny heart and Baby simply obeying. That picture makes my heart lift! Some might say Baby is just an outgoing little guy. True, he is. However, that fact does not diminish the fact that he got to "be God with skin on" to someone yesterday.

Gratituesday: Hard Working Bloggers

I am lazy. I am just a lazy person. I could do so much more throughout the day, but I like to sit and relax. I have been a stay at home wife/mother for just a year now and it feels like I should be prepping for another year of teaching. This past year just felt like one very long summer break and I have treated it that way. Now that school is starting up, I am getting the itch to get organized and to get a ton done.

With all that said, I am so thankful for all the ladies that spend hours putting together blog after blog of shopping deals and coupon match-ups. Through these blogs, I have learned how to shop at various stores. I have learned how to stock my pantry so I spend the least amount on groceries. Through these blogs I have shaved about $100 off my monthly grocery budget. I hope to shave another $50 off within the next few months. There is no way I have the time or energy to do all these myself. What a wonderful gift to give others - to teach them to be wise stewards of the resources God has entrusted them with.

I am especially thankful after my Monday shopping trip. I spent a total of $3.oo out of pocket. I purchased one 10-pack of men's athletic socks at Kohl's and paid $.53 after using a $10 gift card that came in the mail with an advertisement. Our next stop was CVS #1. I spent about $1.25 out of pocket. I used $2 in ECB's from a previous deal. I got $8 back in ECB's! I bought 6 Johnson & Johnson Travel First Aid kits for $.99 each and used a $1.00 coupon with 5 of them (the 6th beeped and the cashier would not let me use it although I have used many in the past no problem) and got $6 ECB's. I also got 2 packs of filler paper for $.99 each with $.99 in ECB's back. I was hungry so I got a candy bar. On to CVS #2. I didn't get my favorite cashier. I got one more first aid kit with the same $1 coupon (cashier tried to tell me I could not use it saying the travel pack was a trial size - Johnson and Johnson has sent out emails saying it is fine to use this coupon - she finally pushed it through), a beach ball for Baby, a pack of pens with a raincheck ($.99 with $.99 ECB's) and another candy bar for me. I used $2 ECB's and paid about $1.50.

Money has been really tight with me staying home. We would not be able to afford simple luxuries like cable tv and internet and would not have been able to replace a car with a van if I was still shopping like "normal" people. I am so thankful for these ladies and how they have helped our family! What a blessing!

Menu Planning Monday

This week, I plan to limit the use of my oven as it is to be in the 90's and humid most of the week. Hubby will miss many meals as band camp starts today. The band director's wife is being induced TONIGHT! Many of the professors are stepping up to help.

Sleep is still a major issue in our house. Baby had one of his to teeth pop through a couple days ago. Three more teeth working their way through. He wakes up writhing in pain when his ibuprofen wears off. Poor little guy! I'm looking forward to sleeping the night in my own bed - even if I still need to wake for night feedings. The bed is soooo much better than the recliner!

Hubby just called to tell me he heard on the radio that our water will be turned off from 9am - 5pm tonight! This is the first we have heard. Thanks water department! 15 minutes to shower and store up jugs of water for the day - we have 3 dogs here at the moment. I am thankful I stocked the pantry with several gallons of water earlier this summer.

Here's the plan!

Monday - BBQ Chicken Quesadillas - use recipe from here and alter by directions below
Tuesday - Burgers on the grill
Wednesday - coolest day of the week! Bubble Pizza Casserole - recipe here
Thursday - Cereal for dinner
Friday - Hamburger Helper taco/rice
Saturday - Chicken Pockets - see recipe below
Sunday - Mac n cheese with hot dogs

BBQ Chicken Quesadillas
I made these after seeing several recipes suggesting something similar. I found that boiling rather than grilling the chicken works well and allows me to use chicken that is not fully thawed.

Prepare chicken and tortillas as before. I pulled the chicken and added in a few tablespoons of BBQ sauce for flavor. Add in some bacon bits (I like the real bits rather than the crunchy Bacos). Serve with BBQ dipping sauce.

Chicken Pockets
This is so stinking easy! Thaw chicken breasts. Preheat oven to 350. Create squares of aluminum foil large enough to pull around one breast of chicken to make a packet. Place one chicken breast on one foil square. Pour 2-3 Tablespoons of your favorite salad dressing on top. Create pouch by pulling foil around chicken and rolling. It should not be snug. Bake for 30 minutes. To serve, top with a tablespoon of fresh dressing.

Affordable Travel

A friend of mine was asking if I had any tips for cheaper hotel stays. I knew of a few things but have learned a bit more since then. Here are some tips!
  1. If you just call the hotel, get a price quote then ask, "Is that your best rate or are there other discounts?" Often, hotel staff quotes the basic room rate first even if there are cheaper rates available.
  2. Call more than one hotel and use the quotes to negotiate a better price.
  3. Use online resources such as Expedia, Orbitz, Hotwire, Sidestep, Hotels, Travelocity, and Priceline (they have a bidding option and a flat rate option). Use them to gather information before calling or use them to simply book your hotel. Check more than one site as the rates for the same hotel can vary significantly from site to site.
  4. If you want an even better deal, try bidding for your hotel rate. With Priceline, the cheapest rate comes when you don't know the hotel name until after you accept your rate and room. To learn what price range would be in a certain star rating (to increase the likelihood of your bid being accepted), check out the message boards at
  5. Other sites are available to get information on using these travel search engines. Try: and
What have my experiences been? We don't travel too terribly much, but have used many of these sites. Sidestep will compare various search engines (expedia, orbitz, etc) and save you a little work. We used Priceline for our last vacation and plan to use it again in the future. Next time we will use the mesasge boards to try to get an even better deal.

Happy bargain hunting!

Freebies, Deals, Coupons

I had to include a tiny newborn picture again! First, a couple quick myths that need to be busted about bargain shopping. I used to believe these myths myself!

  1. Buying the bulk size with the lowest per-unit cost (before coupons) is not always the best deal. Often buying the smallest size with a coupon will cause the item to be nearly free.
  2. Grocery orders will not always look healthy and balanced. Once you start stocking up on items when they are on sale, you will need to buy a balanced order less often - you will be buying things at their cheapest rather than just when you need them.
Now for the deals!

Freebies, Deals, Coupons

What a great day! My mother came to town and brought my 4th cousin - my late grandmother's cousin - to visit. We drove up to the University to show her where Hubby works then we drove to a large local park to see the sights and to have a delish lunch. We did a quick driving tour of our town including the town park and ended up back home. I'm tired! Baby was tired too. He was zonked at 7:30 tonight - whole hour early!

Another great thing - one of his top teeth popped through this morning! He still has one more top one and 2 more bottom teeth coming through, but I'm seeing the light at the end of the sleepless tunnel!

Here are some deals for you today!

Maybe in the future....

Survey Update 3

This will be a short update. I NO LONGER recommend MyView!!!! I have done a ton of surveys plus one product trial for them and thought I was raking in the dough (they claimed to pay between $1 - $3 per survey payable through PayPal). I decided to check my status (have tried in the past without success) to see if I could cash out yet. After many failed attempts I finally emailed customer service to learn that I had been credited for NOT A SINGLE SURVEY!!! They said I had entered a bunch of raffles but had not completed any surveys (even though I got to the screen that said "you may now close this browser window"). After responding I got another response stating the same thing and that basically they won't do anything to look into it. I let them know that I think their company is a scam and I removed myself from their list. I checked them out on SurveyPolice (which I should have done from the beginning) and found that this is a common problem. They just use their members then discard them while profiting from the research gained.

Works for Me Wednesday - Puddle Jumping

We have a huge deck. It is about 5 years old. It hadn't been cared for well by the previous owners. Hubby and I decided to tackle the project of cleaning, staining, and sealing the deck last week. It turned out pretty good!

Today we had a few big storms. Have I told you that living in Nebraska taught me to love storms again after the close call with a tornado in Tennessee? Anyway, after the storms, Baby was itching to get out of the house. He's a man on the move, a guy on the go. What to do? It was too late to go OUT anywhere. Sooo... I put him in a swim diaper and took him to the deck! Why? tons of water was pooled on the deck now that it has been sealed!

Baby had a great time crawling laps at warp speed all over the deck. He was a bit offended that our neighbor did not say hello even after Baby shouted his greeting over and over with a big hand-in-the-air-hail-type wave.

Diaper only, puddle jumping on the deck? Works for me!

Gratituesday: Too Much Grace - I am Overwhelmed

Gratituesday is by far the most difficult post to write each week. I am certainly not lacking in blessings. The problem is having too many to choose from. Today will be a hodge podge of thanksgiving.

I am grateful that I don't get what I deserve. I am a sinner. I deserve Hell. Jesus took my sins and took my place. I deserve Hell but receive blessings instead. Astounding. I can't even begin to wrap my brain around those truths.

I am grateful for the beauty that surrounds me. I catch myself staring at my surroundings. A lot. I grew up near here - the upper Ohio Valley. I moved away to Knoxville, TN and Lincoln, NE and was able to move back. After living on the prairie, I am just astounded at the beauty of the mountains. I took this beauty for granted for 21 years of my life. I vow to never take it for granted again.

Lastly, for today, I am thankful for a blast-from-the-past song. While doing my bargain hunting, I was undone by an old favorite song, "Dandelions" by Five Iron Frenzy. Having a little boy gave this song new meaning. I hope you enjoy it!

Menu Planning Monday

This week should finally be a little more normal. Hubby will be back at work more often and hopefully we'll be out late less. Here is one reason why last week was so crazy:

Hubby and I cleaned and stained our deck. We hope to get at least another 5 years out of it although we'll see. The deck is only 5 years old but was not well cared for with the previous home owners.

Here's another reason:

We spent a day at the amusement park. Baby had a great time!

Ok - here's our plan:

Monday - Roast Chicken (crock pot - see recipe here) and baked potatoes
Tuesday - Enchiladas
Wednesday - Meat Pie
Thursday - Chicken Alfredo
Friday - Pizza
Saturday - Burgers/Dogs/Drumsticks on the grill
Sunday - Chicken Teriyaki

Deals I am Doing

Well, we are back from our amusement park adventure! It was a lot of fun although I was quite disappointed that the only ride Baby could ride was the Merry go Round. Even though the signs in Kiddie Land stated that they had to be able to sit on their own and not in a lap, the operators said he had to be walking to ride the rides. Oh well! He'll have a blast next year.

I was able to go out and do some deals this morning before church. I plan to spend more time with prep work and do more later on this week. Here are a few highlights:

3 Day sale (Sun, Mon, Tues) - Revlon Mineral Mousse Color Stay makeup - $9.99 with $9.99 ECB back. Hurry before your store runs out (if they do, ask for a raincheck - some give them, some don't)

Huggies Deal - I am not doing this one as we are stocked up through January most likely on diapers at this point! CVS has Huggies Jumbo packs on sale for 2/$18 with $4 in ECB's back. Pair this with the $1.50/1 coupons from recent mailers and it ends up (after ECB's to be $6.50/pack).

Rite Aid
I am a little upset with my Rite Aid right now. They have signs up for items for the Single Check Rebates that don't qualify for the rebates! I pointed it out to a manager today and he said I could bring my items back (2 packs Bic pencils - NOT the Grips type that are on rebate although the store tag stated ANY Bic pencil product) and return them to rebuy the correct items.

Deals - there is a great sale on General Mills cereals this week. Each box is marked down to $1.99. Pair that with $1 off 2 coupons from or the $.55 off 1 Honey Nut Cheerieos from the same place and you have a pretty sweet deal. These items also go toward rebate #96 - buy $25 of any variety from Kimberly-Clark/General Mills list and get a $5.00 rebate. There is also a 10% off Rite Aid purchase on although for some reason, my coupon did not work - the computer said it did but it didn't take any money off.

Scotch deskgrip pop-up tape is a MONEY MAKER this week! It is on sale for $2.49 with a $2.49 rebate. Use the $1.00 coupon from this weeks paper (I believe the Smart Source - I clipped and didn't mark it down!). Spend $1.49 out of pocket and get $2.49 back!

JC Penney
Sweet deals here! JCP has many summer things marked down to 75% off plus there is a printable coupon for an extra 20% off through the friends and family event! Click here for a coupon! Coupon good online today and tomorrow. It is only good in stores TODAY!!!

Today is the last day for the big shopping extravaganza at Kohl's. Here is the coupon for 20% off your purchase of $100 or more OR 15% off one purchase!

I had a wonderful evening. It was quiet and I was alone - sort of.

We've been having a really rough two weeks with Baby teething. I spoke with the doctor today to make sure he didn't have an ear infection or something else that needed treatment. Doc said it is just teething. Watching Baby move his tongue around the top gums confirmed it - teething. Two weeks of waking every 45 mins to 2 hours all night long. Last night, he slept 4 one-hour stretches and then was up from 1 - 5am just writhing around in pain in my arms and then playing contentedly on the floor for a half hour (he even learned to brush my hair!). After that painful stretch, he had a couple more one-hour stretches. Hubby has been a great help by taking the morning shift and doing breakfast while I catch up on some sleep.

Anyway, during this rough patch, it has been rare for me to have any time of quiet rest - time to just pull away and listen. Listen for that still, small voice of God speaking to my heart.

Tonight I made a deal with Hubby. Baby was not going down for a nap for me. Hubby was staining the deck. I said "trade you!" He agreed! Baby slept over an hour and then played with Daddy. I got to do easy manual labor in a quiet backyard. It was good for my heart and good for my soul.

Have you had quiet lately?

We'll be out of town tomorrow. We're taking Baby to his first amusement park! We'll be driving about 2 hours - stopping at my parents' on the way to pick them up (and to drop off the dog) since we are going for my father's company picnic. I am excited to see a lot of childhood friends that I have not seen since leaving for college nearly 15 years ago! Pictures will be posted! Deals will resume quite soon!

Freebies, Deals, Coupons

Well, I may be posting less frequently over the next few days. It seems that my laptop power cord has died. Hubby will bring his home tomorrow, but it will be in his home office - not next to my nursing chair - so things will be a little more difficult until we purchase a new one.

On another note, Baby is 10 months old today! I can't believe it! Time is just flying by!

Here are a few deals for y'all!
  • Free Chocolate Friday - after 9am EST Friday morning, click on over for your free chocolate
  • Free Scope fresh breath kit (samples)
  • Free Matrix hair care samples
  • Free book - Passport to Your Health

Random Thoughts

I am filled to overflowing. I taught for 9 years. My students have always felt like my children. Due to the nature of my jobs, I would see the same students year after year and would get really close to them. My last job was teaching 6-12 vocal music. It was a rewarding and very trying job. Recently, thanks to Facebook, I have been in touch with one of my students who graduated a year ago. We had a rocky start together 4 years ago. He wasn't motivated in school and liked to make things difficult for me. He would not sing with any amount of volume and often would just not sing at all. Fast forward to his senior year. By the end of the year, he was singing solos for me at concerts and performing on guitar. Early this summer, I got a message from him thanking me. He thanked me for helping him have the courage to play guitar and sing on his own at a gig at a coffee house. He also let me know he was leaving for basic training the following day. I messaged him back to let him know I was proud of him. Today I saw pictures of him with his shaved head and spiffy uniform having just completed basic. Once again, I just had to let him know how proud I am of him. Is it possible to tell a teenager you are proud too often?

Completely different subject. Sleep. We don't get much of it here. Baby is still working on getting 4 teeth through and wants to let us know EVERY time he feels one move even a teeny bit. Last night I just gave up sleeping in my bed and moved to the recliner in the nursery. Thankfully, he is quite a happy camper anytime he is awake. He loves barking at the dog. Most children start speaking with dada and mama and things like that. Our son barks. No words, just barking.

We are in the process of rotating toys this week. We are nearly ready (sob sob) to store the exersaucer. We are running out of ways to safely contain baby when we need a moment. We still have the pack n play (which he plays in quite nicely for 15 minutes at a time). We just brought out a track with balls that almost contains him. We did find one thing that he likes and that contains him - our old dog crate! It's practically new - the dog figured out how to unzip the blasted thing the second night she slept in there and it hasn't been used since. We tried to sell it before moving, but had no takers. I couldn't see throwing away a $100 portable crate and thought it would make a fun tent or hiding spot for a little one someday. I was right! What good parents we are - putting our child in a dog crate to play. (just a note - we don't zip him in - he is able to come and go as he pleases and we leave all the "tent" flaps up for plenty of ventilation)

Works For Me Wednesday - Weight Loss Tip

I totally did not come up with this tip on my own. I also realize this is a Back to School themed Wednesday. I guess my tip could be applied to back to school by cutting the cravings while packing lunches or making cupcakes for the class!

So, what works for me? Brushing my teeth works for me. I have lost all my baby weight. I have 10 pounds to go to get to my ideal weight. I'd be happy with just 5 more pounds. I am having a hard time losing because I am still breastfeeding and struggling to keep my calories high enough to make enough milk. No, breastfeeding does NOT help every mom lose weight!

When I am done eating for the day (or any time I feel particularly tempted), I brush my teeth. Not only is it good for my pearly whites, it keeps me from eating. I mean, who likes to dirty up a freshly cleaned mouth? If I need to pull out the big guns, I use mouthwash. The A-bomb of battling temptation - Listerine Total Care. This product says ON THE BOTTLE to not eat or drink for 30 MINUTES! The yummy kitchen smells and other temptations are usually GONE in 30 minutes.

What works for you?

Gratituesday: The Pull of the New School Year

I know - this is a strange post coming from me. I have no children in school. I am not teaching. I'm a stay at home mommy. There is just SOMETHING about the start of school that gets me all amped up. Maybe it is from teaching for so long. Maybe I am just strange. Something about the FRESH START. The blank grade book and lesson plan book. The adventure awaiting. The endless possibilities.

This is start of my second year without school of some sort in 27 years! I feel a little lost without preparing a classroom or preparing for taking classes. I am thankful Hubby is a professor so I can help HIM prepare for classes!

I need to remember that I am still a teacher. Every day, my little man is learning amazing things. What will I teach him? Will learning happen accidentally? Of course! Should that be the only way? Of course not.

I am thankful that the start of the school year is spurring me back to being intentional. I am raising a child. I want my child to know Jesus. I want him to hold our family values. I want to be the best mom I can be.

I may just go out and buy myself a lesson plan book. Can't hurt to be organized! I want to be intentional in this most important job!
